AKSE Conference Vienna 2013

AKSE 2013: Conference Report

The 26th biannual conference of the Association for Korean Studies in Europe (AKSE) was held in Vienna from July 6-9, 2013. The organizing team was headed by Professor Rudiger Frank, AKSE Secretary, Chair of East Asian Economy and Society and Head of the Department of East Asian Studies at the University of Vienna.

The first-ever AKSE conference in Austria received 382 paper submissions. In a double-blind peer review process supported by 46 international referees, 160 papers have been selected with an acceptance rate of 42%. The papers were presented in four parallel sessions and 40 panels to 233 registered participants from 24 countries in the Renaissance Imperial Riding School Vienna, the conference hotel and venue.

The main sponsor of the event was the Academy for Korean Studies (AKS) under grant number AKS-2013-C01. The opening ceremony, held on July 6 at the main ceremonial chamber of the University of Vienna, was generously sponsored by the Korea Foundation. Other financial contributors were the University of Vienna and the city of Vienna.

A number of organizations used the occasion to present themselves to the academic community gathered in Vienna. They included the Korean Studies Promotion Service (KSPS), the Literature Translation Institute of Korea, the academic publisher Routledge, and the Korea Journal.

As usual for AKSE conferences, no central topic had been chosen. Rather, the papers represented the vast and still growing variety of Korean Studies in Europe and beyond, including various areas from the humanities and the social sciences and covering a period from ancient to modern times.
